TECHNOLOGY

Children and teenagers inhabit a world where technology is developing very quickly with inbuilt communication capabilities playing a major role. These devices can not only communicate with the internet but with each other making the whole process of retrieval, storage and transfer of data childsplay. One of the key risks of using the internet, email or chat services is that young people may be exposed to inappropriate or harmful content. The "UK Children Go Online" study found that 57% of 9 to 19 year olds had seen pornography online. Most of this viewing was unintentional.


RISK CATEGORIES

Childnet categorises the risks for children into the following three areas:

CONTACT

Grooming using ICT, leading to sexual assault and/or child prostitution.

Bullies using ICT (email, mobile phones, chat rooms etc) as a way to torment their victims.

Children and young people self-publishing information sometimes inappropriate about themselves and therefore putting themselves at risk.

CONTENT

Exposure to age-inappropriate material.

Exposure to inaccurate or misleading information.

Exposure to socially unacceptable material such as that inciting violence, hate or intolerance.

Exposure to illegal material, such as images of child abuse
Downloading of copyrighted materials, e.g. music and films
Plagiarism.

COMERCIALISIM

Exposure to inappropriate commercial advertising.

Exposure to online gambling services.

Commercial and financial scams.
