CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
"Child abuse images" is the preferred term for child pornography firstly because it accurately describes what child pornography is all about; the torture and abuse of children for sexual enjoyment and profit in the real world. Secondly, paedophiles prefer the term "child pornography" because it detracts from the seriousness of the crime being committed.
MULTI-MILLION POUND INDUSTRY
Child pornography is a worldwide, multi million-pound industry. The internet is the ideal medium for paedophiles allowing them to upload, distribute and trade these disturbing abuse images. Mobile phones are also being used as a quick way to capture the abuse sharing it amongst other paedophiles as well as using it to distribute and upload it onto the internet.
Once a paedophile has established a relationship with a child, they can trick them into removing items of clothing then use threats or blackmail as a way of getting the child to reveal more. It is important for children to understand that any revealing photo of themselves may circulate on the internet for many years to come, perhaps to be viewed by future employers.
WHAT IS THE UK DOING ABOUT IT?
The UK has made significant progress into the problem of online child pornography first with the establishment of the Internet Watch Foundation, an online abuse hotline and monitoring agency, and secondly with the establishment of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre.
