Once you have logged in to the computer with your user name and password, it may take a few minutes for the operating system software to load. Once this has settled you should see the desktop below. The desktop may differ from computer to computer because the background may be another colour or may consist of a large image (wallpaper) instead. There may also be more icons (little images) on desktop than the ones you see here.

Common Desktop Icons

My Documents

All the work you do can be saved in this folder. Folder

You can create your own folders on the desktop by clicking the mouse button on the right and select the new folder option from the menu.
My Computer

You can explore the contents of your computer by accessing the Hard drive, Floppy Disc drive and CD drive. Shortcut

You can create shortcut icons on the desktop to quickly launch programs.
Recycle Bin

This is where your work and folders goes when you delete them. Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is a program that allows you to view web pages. It is usually placed on the desktop for convenience.

Start Menu The Start Button

If you click on the start button, you can access the programs installed on your computer, so that you can do useful things like word processing. You can also access other folders and files such as the Control Panel (This is where you control your computer settings) and Search (where you can look for folders and files on your computer).
