A project about understanding local environments
A joint project between Preston Manor City Learning Centre in Brent and Central Enfield City Learning Centre in Enfield Town. The project is aimed at year 6 pupils, one class will be invited from each borough.
The project aims to draw attention to beutiful and unused waterways in each borough. Using digital camera students from each local area will 'map' the river banks through photographs. Students will be encouraged to learn about the natural environment, look past the initial undergrowth and explore what might be behind first impressions.
The students will be encouraged to take a wide variety of photographs that can be then manipulated in Adobe Photoshop. Each student will produce a 'section' of the riverbank. The section will be a visual montage created from the photographs. The section will not necessarily be a true representation of the actual waterway. The students may decide to include mini-beasts popping out from behind weeds, aquatic plants/flowers, or depict any use of the river for leisure/sport/commerce, or draw attention to ways in which it can be conserved/improved - learning and creativity is everything!
The two parts created by Enfield and Brent will be merged together to form one joint waterway, that will unite both areas of London in a virtual landscape.
- Sample locations using pond nets, identify representative mini beasts and examine with digital microscopes.
- Identify any plants and photograph at specific locations.
- Take simple measurements of light, temperature and other factors at each site photographed.
- Children can write and record audio about their discoverys as a talking 'story book' to be linked to hot spots on the river landscape montage.
- The initial outcome is a photo montage combining the work done in both boroughs.
This will be showcased on both City Learning Centre websites.
