What they're up to...

Stacy Lee

Student, Masters of Mathematics, St Andrews University

I was involved with Blaze radio when it first started out. I was a Studio Manager and ran the studio manager team, did training and other technical bits and bobs for its first year. Then did projects, some training and other things for the radio in my last year of sixth form.

Now I'm at university and involved in STAR fm or 'St Andrews Radio'. Its only in its 2nd year but is going well so far. We broadcast on fm, but only for two weeks at a time because we can't afford the license for long periods of time. So far we do two broadcasts an academic year, one in each semester. In its first year I was in the technical team and did similar things to Blaze, except I was the only person who knew about audio editing (Wavelab) or how to make jingles etc. so it was a bit of a strain doing them all. This year I'm the "Head of Technical and Production" (nice ring to it.). Finished Preston Manor 6th form July 2004.

Ayesha

Radio presenter for 1xtra

I got into radio presenting at 14. I attended the Blaze Radio summer school which covered presenting skills and editing. I was asked to do lunchtime shows which were broadcast to other schools.
When I was doing Blaze a few of us went to BBC 7 to be interviewed. I was really excited. We stopped off at 1Xtra on the way and I saw someone on work experience there and I knew that’s what I really wanted to do. Within a few weeks I was there, soaking up all the knowledge I could.
I heard about Xtra Talent later and I was not going to send in a demo! I didn't think I was good enough. But in the end I decided to give it a go, I never dreamt that my demo would impress the judges.
Getting the Saturday morning show (6-9am) was something I was totally unprepared for. I screamed when I found out!

The most important thing in being a presenter is concentration. Knowing how to drive the desk is important too (something which I was afraid to do for a long time). Also I couldn't have done it without support from my mother and friends. I strongly believe that if you have support behind you and will power, you can do anything at any age!
